Clive Bowen with Steve Tootell at Brookhouse Pottery supported by David and Margaret Frith for North
The Project: A collaborative Clive Bowen-Steve Tootell wood-firing (inviting North Wales Potters) supported by David and Margaret Frith at Brookhouse Pottery, Denbigh. The event included a 2 hour presentation and demonstration by Clive Bowen at Brookhouse Pottery during the kiln cooling day.
The Premise:To create a unique wood firing of earthenware pottery in Steve Tootell's wood kiln at Brookhouse Pottery, Denbigh. The firing included work from Clive and Steve and also up to 20 project participants from North Wales Potters. Steve’s kiln has always been used for soda firings (in reduction) to 1300C.
Steve is ethically unhappy with the amount of carbon generated by reduction in previous wood firings and therefore was keen to experiment with a "clean" earthenware 1100C wood firing in oxidation and hoping to create a firing precedent for the future.
his special event was made more meaningful by the inclusion of one of Britain's most celebrated earthenware potters Clive Bowen.
